Material Selection

How to Choose Between 6061 and 6063 Aluminum

Separate mechanical parts from industrial extrusion, then review strength, section, machining, appearance and finish.

Start with Material Form and Product Use

6061 and 6063 can both appear in equipment structures, but stock form and downstream manufacturing often differ. Machined plate, bar or flat bar should be discussed separately from industrial extrusion frames.

Mechanical Parts and Machining

When the requirement centers on general mechanical structures, cutting, holes, threads and assembly dimensions, 6061 is often an initial candidate. Actual load, blank, temper, tolerance and finish still matter.

Industrial Extrusion and Appearance Structures

6063 is more often discussed with industrial extrusion, equipment frames, appearance structures and finishing. Key inputs are section, wall, length, joining, anodizing or appearance, plus cutting, holes and end machining.

Questions to Resolve in the RFQ

  • Whether the stock is plate, bar, flat bar or a defined extrusion section.
  • Whether the part mainly carries load, locates, joins or serves appearance and framing.
  • Which cutting, hole, end, thread or CNC operations are needed.
  • How finish, color and critical appearance faces are specified.

Neither Grade Is Absolutely Better

The choice between 6061 and 6063 is usually driven by product form and manufacturing route, not a simple ranking. Final selection follows the drawing, section, load, temper, service conditions and agreed technical requirements.

Final material selection requires confirmation against drawings, service conditions, standards and technical requirements.
